Annual salary

The FIQ collective agreement, in paragraph 7.29, counts 52.18 weeks in a year.

Progression and experience

Paragraph 7.23 of the FIQ agreement sets the time spent at each step for titles at ranking 19 or higher: six months of experience at steps 1 to 8, one year at steps 9 to 18. A nurse therefore reaches step 9 after four years and step 18 after thirteen years.

At hiring, article 8 places the employee according to her previous experience. One year of work in the profession counts as one year of experience. A nurse who left more than five years ago is placed no higher than the second-to-last step. The employer requires written proof of this experience.

Premiums

The following rates come from article 9 of the FIQ agreement and the premium table of the CPNSSS, for the period from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027.

PremiumBase rateIncreased rate
Evening7% of the hourly salary, minimum $2.08 an hour10%
Night14% of the hourly salary, minimum $4.17 an hour18%
Weekend5% of the hourly salary, minimum $1.50 an hour9%
CHSLD, maison des aînés, maison alternative$1.74 an hour$2.33 an hour

The increased evening, night and weekend premiums go to an employee with 70 or more paid hours per 14-day pay period. The weekend premium also requires a service open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Paragraph 9.06 names the nurse among the titles that receive the CHSLD (long-term care centre) premium. The increased $2.33 premium goes to a nurse who works all the hours set for her job title. Our article Working in a CHSLD describes this setting.

The critical care premium applies to the emergency room, intensive care, the neonatal unit, the coronary unit and the burn unit. It is 15% for 70 or more paid hours per 14-day period, 14% from 42 hours and 10% under 42 hours.

Overtime

Paragraph 19.03 of the FIQ agreement pays overtime at time and a half of the regular salary, or $44.42 an hour at step 1 and $71.22 at step 18. Double time applies on a statutory holiday and, under the conditions of paragraph 19.04, to a full weekend shift in a service open 24 hours a day. See our article on mandatory overtime.

Nurse, licensed practical nurse and clinical nurse

The same nomenclature pays the licensed practical nurse (nursing assistant in Quebec), title 3455, from $27.78 to $37.08 an hour. The clinical nurse, title 1911, earns from $31.06 to $55.04 an hour. Under paragraph 7.24 of the FIQ agreement, a nurse who holds a bachelor's degree in nursing is reclassified as a clinical nurse in her position if she commits to performing its duties. See licensed practical nurse salary and our article on the clinical nurse.

This article summarizes the nomenclature and the collective agreement. It is neither legal advice nor union advice.
